MTV's picks for Rock HOF Class of 2034

Very interesting read. As a huge fan of Daughtry I certainly hope this comes true and the band are able to continue to write relevant music and Chris can continue to show off his awesome voice and songwriting/producing ability. It's great that they are even mentioned in this at all.

http://newsroom.mtv.com/2009/12/15/rock-and-roll-hall-of-fame-inductees/

Congratulations are in order to the Stooges, Genesis and ABBA, who lead the latest batch of inductees in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Along with the Hollies and Jimmy Cliff, they'll all be sworn into rock's most hallowed hall on March 15, 2010. Since most aspects of the Hall of Fame are sort of inexplicable, arguments about who belongs and who doesn't aren't particularly useful. (Though for the record: The Stooges belong, Genesis is questionable and ABBA is confounding. Also, Kiss got robbed.) That's why we've decided to look forward and try to guess who might be headed to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in the future.

The criteria for induction requires that a band is not eligible until 25 years after the release of their first album. So let's take a look at five groups who has made it big recently and who could be a part of the all-star jam in 2034.

Kings of Leon: A current favorite among pop lovers, alternative fans and classic rock aficionados, Kings of Leon have the right spirit and attitude to have a memorable career. The success of Only by the Night (and the huge single "Use Somebody") will likely be repeated several more times in the next two decades.

Taylor Swift: She's almost certainly going to be the best-selling artist of the coming decade, and she'll continue to bring the pop and country worlds even closer together, which means she'll end up being both a great musician and something of a revolutionary. That sounds exactly like Hall of Fame material.

The Black Keys: Their new album as BlakRoc keeps pushing the boundaries of their garage punk/no wave/gutter funk sound, and it seems like it's only a matter of time before the Black Keys establish themselves as mainstream players.

Muse: They're one of the few younger bands working today who play intricate music and construct complicated albums but can still get played on the radio and attract stadium-sized audiences. Their combination of commercial and critical success should serve them well over time.

Daughtry: The dude sells millions of albums and seems primed to have a real critical breakthrough sooner rather than later. Think of him as Bon Jovi: In the Slippery When Wet era, the idea of them as one of the greatest of all time would have sounded ludicrous. But now, is there any doubt that they are Hall of Fame material?

Mike Portnoy talks about Rock Band and Guitar Hero helping the band's popularity

Mike Portnoy, Dream Theater's legendary drummer, says that DT's recent rise in popularity is due to Rock Band and Guitar Hero, and also that there is a possibility for the entire DT catalog to be released in Rock Band. I'm drooling over this news.

http://www.3news.co.nz/Dream-Theater-rock-Auckland/tabid/368/articleID/132395/cat/707/Default.aspx

Here's the post on Portnoy's forum about the Dream Theater catalog possibility, of which Jordan Rudess also confirmed:

"My company does the official transcription books for DT - we've already been in contact with DT's management about doing DT's music for the RBN. Chris Romero, who transcribes keys for Jordan, happens to be an amazing Rock Band player - he was top 25 in the world at one point on the 360 leaderboards. He was on this the day they announced it - they're looking at the feasibility of it as far as legal issues etc. We really want to do it and Chris is the perfect person to make the charts for them... Fingers are crossed that it'll happen."

Latest Alter Bridge recording update

Latest news on Alter Bridge:

Hello Alter Bridge Nation,

We are pleased to announce that full band writing sessions for our third album will resume in the first week of December when Myles will fly down to Florida. We hope to get the writing done by the end of January so that we may start recording in February. Mark is hard at work writing songs (he never stops) for the upcoming album as we speak. We are very excited to meet up in December and we will keep you posted when the process starts.

Right now, Myles is locked up in a recording studio until December laying down tracks for his solo project. We are all psyched to hear what our brother in music comes up with as we are sure it will be astounding. We’ll update you with more on this once Myles emerges from the studio.

For those of you who have yet to hear… Myles was tapped by none other than Slash to co-write and sing a song on Slash’s upcoming solo record. We know it was a dream come true for Myles as GNR was very influential to him. Here is a link to read some news on this…

We also want to thank all of you fans for spreading the word and keeping our Live In Amsterdam DVD in the Top Ten on Amazon.com in Music DVD’s. We do not have any new news to report on when it will be available worldwide or for digital download, other than the fact that our management says they are working on it. You never know how long all this legal stuff will take, so our advice is to take advantage of the Amazon opportunity. Here is a direct link to purchase (the DVD should work on all computers)…

http://www.amazon.com/Alter-Bridge-Live-Amsterdam/dp/B002RKD8CS/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1257976072&sr=8-1

The only other news that we would like to convey is that we will be back with a vengeance in 2010. Don’t listen to what anyone else says. We are all very supportive of each other in all the projects we do, but never doubt that Alter Bridge is our soul. The plan is to have a new album out for you fans in the second half of 2010. We will tour again as soon as we get the album out.
Thank you, again, for being patient while Mark, Brian, Myles and Flip all work on different projects.

We’ll let you know how the writing is coming along once we all get together to work out ”ABIII” (Working Title) in the first week of December. Until then, we hope you enjoy our DVD!

Keep rocking,

Alter Bridge

Dream Theater's newest cd makes highest chart/sales numbers in band's career

From Mike Portnoy's Facebook:

DT CRACKS US TOP 10!!! -AND REGISTER FOR MP APPEARANCES
From Mike Portnoy
Just got this below email from our A&R guy at Roadrunner....

Dream Theater's Black Clouds & Silver Linings entered the US Billboard Charts today at #6!!

This is truly amazing....that after almost 25 years together, this band is still growing and progressing and doing bigger and better numbers than ever.....I can't think of many bands that can claim that...

Plus - a progressive metal album with four songs over 12 minutes in the US Top 10???
(wedged between Jonas Brothers, Eminem and Hannah Montana!)
Hell must've frozen over!!!!
(this must be a first of its kind.....)

See the statistics below.....

Thank you everybody!
MP

-------------------------

from Monte Conner (Roadrunner Records):

We did 40,285 units in the first week to come in at #6 (!!!)

That is DT’s highest US chart number ever, beating “Systematic Chaos” which charted at #19 back in May 2007 and until now was the band’s highest chart debut.

That is also DT’s highest first week units total ever - handily beating “Awake” which did 36,160 first week back in October 1994 (#32 on the chart). “Awake” was the first (and very heavily anticipated) DT album in the wake of the band’s previous breakthrough album “Images And Words” - with its smash hit “Pull Me Under” - and yet here we are 15 years later totally crushing it.

Previous DT highs:
Systematic Chaos: 35,689 (#19) – May 2007
Awake: 36,160 (#32) – October 1994

FYI, 4,783 of those sales were digital (over 10%), and we have actually scanned 40,591 to date because there were pre-release street violations of 306 units last week.

AND lastly, we are the #2 debut of the week. Below is the Top 10:

1
BLACK EYED PEAS
E.N.D. (ENERGY NEVER DIES) \

2
JONAS BROTHERS
LINES VINES & TRYING TIMES

3
SPEKTOR*REGINA
FAR

4
MATTHEWS*DAVE BAND
BIG WHISKEY & THE GROOGRUX KIN

5
EMINEM
RELAPSE

6
DREAM THEATER
BLACK CLOUDS & SILVER LININGS

7
TRANSFORMERS: REVENGE OF THE F
SOUNDTRACK

8
LADY GAGA
FAME

9
GINUWINE
MAN'S THOUGHTS

10
HANNAH MONTANA
HANNAH MOVIE SNDTRK

So there you have it. To achieve all of this 25 years into the band’s career is simply a monumental feat, not to mention it was done in a poor economy, where it is hard to find a real record store and where sales are down 52% since 2001 and probably down close to 20% this year from 2007.

Congrats to all!!!!!!!!!

Legendary progressive metal masters Dream Theater’s latest album, Black Clouds & Silver Linings has taken the band to new heights. The album debuted at #6 on Billboard’s Top 200 album chart, with first week sales totaling 40,285. Both numbers mark the highest ever first week figures for the band, who are enjoying the greatest success of their 25 year career. 12% of the week’s sales were digital, ranking Black Clouds & Silver Linings at #21 on the Digital Albums chart.

Drummer Mike Portnoy had this to say, “This is truly amazing. After almost 25 years together, Dream Theater is still growing and progressing and doing bigger and better than ever. I can't think of many bands that can claim that. We are truly thankful to have this incredible support from fans who believe in the band as a musical force.”

Such a monumental debut places Dream Theater, a band known for lengthy epics and the true “album” format, in the cozy Top 10 company of Jonas Brothers, Black Eyed Peas and Regina Spektor, a truly remarkable feat. Portnoy continues, “An album with four songs over 12 minutes in the US Top 10? Hell must've frozen over! This is one small leap for Dream Theater, and one giant leap for music in general.”

Black Clouds & Silver Linings is the band’s tenth studio album and follow up to the band’s 2007 Roadrunner Records debut, Systematic Chaos. In addition to the standard version CD, the album is also available on vinyl LP, as well as a three-disc Special Edition CD that includes the full album, a CD of instrumental mixes of the album and a CD of six cover songs. A limited deluxe collector’s edition boxed set is also available. “This is as smart and well played as metal and hard rock gets, an album just humming with live possibilities and headphone trips waiting to happen,” wrote Dennis Cook in is 6/23/2009 review at Jambase.com, while Shawn S. Lealos said in his 6/16/09 review at 411Mania.com: “Dream Theater has created their masterpiece.”

Dream Theater is currently breaking records in Europe, playing to festival crowds of over 80,000 adoring fans. The band made their debut appearance in Israel last month, rocking a crowd 10,000 strong to their knees. The band’s own Progressive Nation tour returns stateside on July 24 in Miami, and will feature Dream Theater as headliner, Zappa Plays Zappa, Bigelf and Scale The Summit. The tour—which marks the second incarnation of Progressive Nation--wraps on August 29th in Los Angeles.

As only the 10th Top 10 debut in Roadrunner’s 30 year history, Black Clouds & Silver Linings is landmark album for the label as well.
